Bum Watching Over a River

Though he was still, I was rushing forward,
so our fleeting glance gave him only time
to say he did not often meet the eyes
of strangers. He had, I think, been looking
into the eyes of the empty space before him
-- eyes deep and beautiful, like yours --
and wishing them repeatedly good night
though it was only afternoon.
